Roosevelt was an accomplished president, a Nobel Prize winner, and getting the Panama Canal built alone is probably what justifies his face on Mount Rushmore. I’ve seen pretty much every movie he’s made. DiCaprio is, in my eyes, a top two or three actor in Hollywood. People have lots of things in their busy lives to contend with and worrying about a NFL team’s name, regardless of how absurd it is, just doesn’t cut it. So for the fans holding on to it for all these years, was it simply a question of not caring? That’s an easier feeling to settle into when the team itself didn’t bother to change the logo or name. Native American rights groups have been fighting against “Redskins” at least as far back as the 1960s and there have been numerous advocacy groups over the past 20 years who have challenged the morality of having a team with this name in the nation’s capital.Įveryone knows what’s going on here. Or maybe it hadn’t been brought to your attention in a way where you actually had to confront it. As you reach adulthood, you may notice a few things don’t pass the smell test, but you look the other way - it’s not that big of a deal you say to yourself. When you’re young and grow up with a team, you love and appreciate everything about the team, flaws and all. Hardcore fans of the team will bristle at this move as a PR overreach and I get why - no, honestly I do. The optics would have been mega-awful for the team to go about the business of changing its name and moving on from that helmet image, only for fans to come dressed as a bootleg Sitting Bull. Wednesday’s news that the Washington Football Team will no longer allow fans to wear headdresses or facepaint to games shouldn’t be a shocker.
